This mini comp was so much fun for me.Bringing these two to life were amazing. For a better understand the briefing for the comp I pasted below.Enjoy.

Brief:
Take something explosive–dynamite, rockets, etc. and give it some real personality! You can be as cartoony or as realistic as you want, just make it awesome.

-For this mini you may create your own base mesh in 3d or in zpsheres, etc.

-You are NOT restricted to only using sculpting tools (you can use 3d max/maya’s normal tools if need be–just keep it high res).

-Base, background are optional

-coloring/textures are NOT allowed for this mini–let’s focus on just the modeling. Subtool tinting and simple value shifts are fine, but no actual painting of a texture.

It’s strongly strongly STRONGLY encouraged that you post progress images as replies this thread. We’re not forcing everyone to yet, but half of the point of these minis are to help build up the community. If you’re posting last minute without at least saying hello, then you’re missing all the fun! Stop lurking!

Please do not make a new thread for your entry. Keep all w.i.p shots in this specific thread.

Final Submission:

Submit one image, 1000×1000 pixels or less. This image should include a ‘final Explosive Personality image’ (required), and any preliminary work (sketches) you wish to show (optional).

These are some concepts and turn arounds and stuff for a contest that was on DA.I believe it was called Artist At The Ready.Or something along those lines.I really wish I could of made the deadline with the reference sheets but I just had so much going on.It was too hard.

Time management is so fucking hard.

If anyone has any tips for it…PLEASE..I would love to be informed.

Anyway, the artists in the tournament are so good.I can’t wait for the finals. So many guesses for who will come out on top but its looking like anyones game right now.I love this industry.

1 2 – Two Dee

June 15, 2009

Last night I did a quick gray to color sketch of my favorite Naruto female.Hinata Hyuga. She also has my favorite last name.Which I find interesting.I have been doing so much 3d that I felt as if I have forgotten all about the 2d aspect of myself. So here is me….getting in touch with my shit again.

Hinata copy

So the other day I did some experimenting with a few aspects of 3d that I have not touched in detail and have almost been avoiding. First test was a comparison between Xnormals normal maps and 3ds max’s normal maps. What I found was that retopo’s done in max seem to hold the normal map generated from Max better than Xnormals.Though this just being a quick experiment so don’t quote me on anything ya know.My results are below.Max is on the left Xnormal is on the right.Don’t mind the neck weirdness.I fucked up the UV’s.It was a long night ya know.

WHAT

Second test was one of lighting. For the longest time I had been trying to figure a way out to get light to bounce color off and onto surrounding objects. When I got ready to re-explore this I found this tutorial. It only took minutes before I was getting the results I desired.Below are some of my renders. The one far left is with one plane bouncing light onto the object, the middle one is two planes of separate colors and the last is three planes all of different colors.

Yep

Lighting

My last test was posing your sculpture in Zbrush. For the longest time I was intimidated by the thought of messing my tool up for good but once I got a hang of the layers it was easy.Below is the outcome.

1 0 – Hit Me!

June 11, 2009

So I figured that I have been doing alot of bust shots lately so I decided to try and cut into doing a torso and as expected the torso cut into me instead.Struggling with this one I reframed from giving the arms and hands a go and eliminated them all together.I think im going to try to get one more torso in today.I really need the practice.

PS.
I have found that matching your face sculpting style with your body sculpting style is rather hard.Sometimes im left feeling as if the face and the torso are from two seperate style genres.Saddening indeed.V_V

The challenge has been over for a bit now and I had to let out the left over tension. So I sculpted up this guy.Testing outthis new MatCap I acquired, you should check them out here at www.zclassroom.com.Also got the plug-in to separate the subtools by materials from there also.

So the challenge is finally over and boy was it one annoying ass challenge.Everyone including myself had random problems turning up as they went along.I think we all bombed the challenge due to our not understanding how much work it really was going to take to complete it in 3 days.
BUT!
What I can definitely say about this was that we all LEARNED a great deal in such a short time span.Talents that I know some of us knew not of had revealed themselves. The knowledge passed back and forth between the three of us not only giving us hope but lighting our invisible bulbs. It was definitely an honor competing with these 2.

Here are the finished ….uh….products.

So my new Sidekick went under the knife today.Saddening day indeed.I wasn’t too nervous, the surgeon(my girlfriend) I am very close to and I know she would never do anything to hurt my baby and she was kind enough to show me pictures of the operation. Plastic Surgery gots nothing on this.
